The American poet Amy Lowell died in 1925. Her will established an annual scholarship to support travel abroad for gifted American-born poets. The scholarship is administered by the Trustees under her will, at the law firm of Choate, Hall & Stewart in Boston, Massachusetts. The Trustees welcome applicants from all ethnic backgrounds to apply, as they strive to support and encourage a diverse group of poets.

he Kelly Foundation of Washington is offering $2,500 awards for its scholarship program, the Ewing C. Kelly Scholarship.  This award is named in honor of Ewing C. Kelly, a longtime radio and television broadcaster. The Ewing C. Kelly Scholarship is designed to reward students who demonstrate good citizenship while striving to attain their academic goals.  Applicants will be judged on their academic merit, extracurricular achievements both scholastically and in their community and financial need.

Ben Cheney had a significant interest in supporting youth and youth athletics through his philanthropy. The Ben B. Cheney Foundation continues his legacy by awarding one scholar athlete from each of the 32 high schools in Pierce County, and one from Ben’s hometown, South Bend, each year.
Since 1976, the Ben B. Cheney Foundation has awarded more than $1.5 million in college scholarships through this program.
This $3,000 scholarship recognizes student athletes with plans to further their education in a not-for-profit vocational and technical school, or a 2- or 4-year college in the United States following graduation. Scholarship funds will be paid directly to the school or college on the student’s behalf the first week of August.

Only one nominee is allowed per school (unless the graduation class exceeds 400, in which case a second candidate may be nominated). SHEF is affiliated with Scholarship America Dollars for Scholars®, linking our community to Dollars for Scholars programs operating across the country, which collectively award more than $41 million to 40,000 students annually. Scholarships vary and can be based on academics, athletics, the arts, volunteer work, and paid work, among other activities. 

The generosity of our community has supported over 250 students as they continue their education after high school by providing more than $125,000 in scholarships over the years.

Scholarships have been funded in the past through numerous SHEF Auctions and Dinners, and the By the Bay Car Shows are held each July. In addition, several generous community members fund specific scholarships in their own name, or in memory of family members. General donations are also warmly welcomed, and provide  invaluable support to the SHEF organization and its work.

The Maxwell Scholarship was established to assist high school seniors from Western Washington in obtaining a higher education. For freshmen starting college during the 2023-24 academic year, scholarships will be $5,000 per year or less based on financial need. This award has the potential to be renewed for up to an additional three years of undergraduate education based on financial need and reasonable progress toward graduation. A simple renewal application is required each year.

The Career and Technical Scholarship (CTS) supports Washington students on their path to high-demand trade, STEM and health care occupations. To be eligible, Scholars must enroll in an approved program, such as welding, manufacturing or IT, at one of Washington’s 34 community and technical colleges. Scholars are eligible to receive up to $1,500 each quarter for the duration of their associate degree, certificate or apprenticeship program. These scholarship funds are flexible and can be used to cover tuition, fees and other costs of attendance such as housing, transportation, food and more.
